The Power of Representation in Hockey
Dean Barnes
Feb. 28, 4 to 5:30 p.m.
Location: TBD
Join the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Western Sports & Recreation as we learn about the impacts that Black individuals have made to hockey.
Audiences will learn about Dean's personal background, career journey and the importance of Black History Month in celebrating the achievements of past and present Black hockey players. There will be an opportunity to see his hockey card collection of 100 Black and biracial players which was previously displayed in the NHL Black Hockey History Museum across North America.
Dean is the creator and host of the podcast My Hockey Hero, which shares inspirational stories of Black and racialized NHL players from the Canadian Hockey League with the goal of promoting representation and inclusion in hockey.
Dean hopes his projects will change the general perception of who plays hockey, serving as an inspiration for Black children to see hockey as an option and pursue their dreams of playing in the N.H.L. He is a former University of Waterloo Ice Hockey player and maintains an active lifestyle by playing hockey and golf in his spare time.
